Philippe Lancelot
Situated in Cramant at the Cote de Blancs, Champagne Philippe Lancelot has been Demeter-certified since 2012 and has abstained from using sulfur since 2015, aiming to reveal the purest expression of each cru.
Profile
Philippe Lancelot oversees 4 hectares in and around Cramant, with a focus on Chardonnay. They make champagne from the towns of Cramant, Avize, Chouilly, Oiry, Epernay and Aÿ where the soil consists almost exclusively of pure chalk. The champagne house began working with biodynamic principles in 2012 and was certified organic in 2014 and biodynamic in 2015.
In the vineyard
Since 2009, Philippe Lancelot has partnered with Hervé Jestin, the current cellar master at Leclerc Briant. With his experience in biodynamics, he has contributed knowledge about the optimal ripeness of the grapes and methods for vinification with as little sulfur as possible, which Philippe Lancelot has not used a single gram of in his cellar since 2015.
In the cellar
Lancelot’s wines are organized into three tiers. The base cuvées are followed by Lieu-Dits from Cramant and Epernay as well as special cuvées. His top cuvée is Ivresse, a pure Chardonnay from Grand Cru Vineyards in Cramant and Chouilly. The absence of sulfur and the low dosage contribute to the purity of the wines and have made Philippe Lancelot's wines renowned for their precision, minerality and vibrant expression.
